I wonder if an AirPort Extreme base station with multiple ethernet ports could solve my problem. Otherwise, use the Mac's Airport status menu to select its network, wait for it to show up in AU, and then select it. Do not attempt to use Aiport Utility 5.4.2 to configure WDS - it doesn't work, especially with Airport Extreme. I am at the end of the rope here.

Any functional configuration of the WRT54G should suffice.
