For me the problem occurred after switching from NVIDIA to INTEL mode after updating the system - seems that changed the Intel driver. Thank you for your help! The try ro remove all remnants of fglrx, and/or maybe re-install xorg-x11-server and Mesa-libGL1. For me it clearly looks like a bug at the shared object.

I can also boot to lightdm and kdm, although they will fail to load any Desktop environment (gdm doesn't work).- I can run the X from the console using startx. Went for a shiny new application package and did not realize what I got into by keeping the Factory repo enabled. I ran, sudo apt-get upgrade Rebooted and unity desktop came back 100% I hope that this works for all of you. Not the answer you're looking for?
